Dodge Challenger SRT Demon Wins 2017 Popular Science Best of What’s New Award
The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon won an extremely prestigious award this week from Popular Science magazine. The Best of What’s New awards honor the most innovative technology available to the public. It covers the top 100 new technologies in 11 different categories. Best of What’s New covers everything from ground breaking medical technologies to the latest technological gadgets. The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon was given a Best of What’s New Award for its innovative SRT Power Chiller.
The SRT Power Chiller
The Power Chiller is a dedicated liquid circuit separate from the engine. This circuit cools air after it leaves the supercharger and before it is pushed through to the engine. It is able to chill the air by diverting refrigerant from the air conditioning to the Power Chiller.
As air leaves the supercharger it passes through a low-temperature radiator and then through the Power Chiller where it is cooled by refrigerant. It then passes through heat exchangers in the supercharger which further cools the compressed air as it enters the intake port. There are more air molecules in cold air than in warm air. By cooling the air before it enters the intake the engine receives more air molecules which allows for more gas from the injectors. More gas, plus more air, equals more horsepower.
“Creating a street-legal machine that is powered by an engine with unrelenting power and torque, specifically engineered for the drag strip, yet street legal and meeting all emissions, pass-by noise and SRT durability standards demands outside-the-box thinking,” said Chris Cowland, Director of Advanced and SRT Powertrain, FCA US LLC. “The technologies that make lower-volume SRT products special can deliver significant benefits in alternative applications. For example, while denser intake air and high-octane fuels are part of the recipe that makes the Challenger SRT Demon a head-turner, they can be just as important in meeting the challenges of improving fuel economy.”
While the Power Chiller is only available on the SRT Demon, advancements in technology like this often trickle down into more high volume mainstream vehicles. The SRT Power Chiller is used expressly for increasing horsepower in the SRT Demon, but engineers for the Dodge Challenger believe that it can eventually be utilized for purposes such as increasing fuel efficiency.
The Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is a one-of-a-kind engineering master piece. It is the most powerful street legal vehicle on the market with its 808-horspower engine. Production of the 2018 Dodge Challenger SRT Demon is limited to 3,300 vehicles. If you are looking to get in to one of these modern marvels then you better act fast.
