The 2015 Dodge Challenger: An American Icon Reborn

It’s hard not to pin certain eras of American history to specific cars. For well over a century, cars have defined culture, fashion, and spirit. The Dodge Challenger is no different. After more than five decades, the Challenger has captured the imagination and love of drivers; a skill that is alive and well in the newest version.

Challenger’s Bona Fides

Way back in 1958, Dodge created the Challenger as a two-door, limited-edition beast. With an available V8, classic flared lines in the chassis, and an exclusive silver color, the Challenger set the tone for the future. Fast forward to 1971 and one of the greatest high-speed chases in the film, Vanishing Point, and the Challenger’s cultural cache was guaranteed.

The Car Itself

At minimum, the 2015 Challenger comes with a 3.6-liter V6 engine that delivers 305 horsepower and 268 pounds of torque. At its maximum, you can have over 700 horsepower and 650 pounds of torque from a supercharged 6.2-liter V8 Hellcat engine. The Challenger’s legacy of power is well cared for, but at 30 miles per gallon, a fully integrated digital dashboard, and Harman Kardon audio, the Challenger has been brought into the future, too.

Beyond the Hype

Car and Driver has noted that the Challenger has held on to the style reminiscent of the 70s icon, but has brought a much more aggressive competitor to the market. With a beautiful look and an impressive amount of power for a V6, their take is that the Challenger is still in the leading pack of American muscle.
