Safety Tips for a Trip on the Water
It is summertime, which means it is time to load up the crew and hit the waves or take some time to yourself on the water, just you, your cooler and your fishing pole. Boating season is in full swing, and we want to help you make it a safe and fun one.
Before you Leave
- Before you hit the water, make sure your tags and insurance are all up-to-date. It is a good idea to review your insurance limits with your insurance company before you put the boat in the water.
- Make sure you have fire extinguishers and that they work properly.
- Pack enough lifejackets and water for everyone onboard.
- Before you put the boat on the trailer, check the trailer’s tire pressure, braking system, and lights.
- Do not transport invasive species. Scrub the bottom of your boat before you leave the house.
- Complete a visual inspection of the boat before you load it on the trailer. You should do so a few days before you leave so you can have any repairs completed before your trip.
- If this is our first boating trip, or you just aren’t as confident as you should be, take a boating safety course.
On the Water
When you are on the water, consider a few safety tips:
- Apply sunscreen and re-apply every couple hours, especially on younger children
- Put hats on kids, and make sure minors are in lifejackets.
- Do not allow ANYONE under the age of 21 to consume alcohol. Adults who drink on the trip must stay hydrated, avoid operating the boat, and should not be left unattended.
- If you are in the boat for any length of time, make sure everyone is eating and drinking enough water.
- Do not litter in the water.
- Make sure more than one person is familiar with how to operate the boat and handle emergency situations in case something happens to you.
- Keep track of the weather.
- Tell someone, who is not going on the trip, what your plans are for the day and when you will return.
