Jeep Grand Cherokee & Grand Cherokee L Receive IIHS Top Safety Pick+ Awards

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) is quite possibly the most important creation in the history of the automobile. Since 1959 when they were founded, cars have become safer, and crash testing has become even more data-driven. They have literally changed the way cars are designed and engineered simply by proving that certain types of vehicle accidents are more deadly than others. 

How IIHS Ranks Cars

This is why it is such a great accomplishment when a vehicle is awarded the IIHS Top Safety Pick and Top Safety Pick+. The IIHS doesn’t just crash cars and rate them, they also rate a vehicle’s headlights, safety restraints, collision avoidance technology, and features. Their ratings are simple: Poor, Marginal, Acceptable, and Good for crash and occupant injury tests, and Basic, Advanced, and Superior for safety technology. Vehicles crash tested must feature a mix of Acceptable and Good as well as rank in the Advanced and Superior safety tech areas to be considered a Top Safety Pick. However, to qualify for the Top Safety Pick+, a car must receive all Good rankings across the board.

Enter the new Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L, as the IIHS has awarded both of them the Top Safety Pick+ award. This means that both the two and three-row SUVs are two of the safest vehicles you can purchase on the market today.

Engine & Fuel Economy

The Jeep Grand Cherokee and Grand Cherokee L models are powered by a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 293 horsepower and 260 lb-ft of torque. The EPA fuel economy is 19 mpg city and 26 mpg highway, respectively, for both two and four-wheel drive models. The 4WD Grand Cherokee L drops by just 1 mpg on both cycles. 

Safety Technology

One reason why the Grand Cherokees were awarded with the Top Safety Pick+ is due to the advanced safety and collision avoidance technology, such as Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB) technology that Jeep calls Full-Speed Collision Warning with Active Braking and Pedestrian/Cyclist Detection. The system was accurate enough in both day and nighttime to be considered advanced by the IIHS and their requirements. Jeep Grand Cherokee customers also benefit from having more than 110 available safety features, including Intersection Collision Assist and Drowsy Driver Detection.
