Stellantis Teams Up With Other Automakers to Boost North America’s Charging Network

More High-Powered Car Charging Stations Coming to North America

There are gas stations everywhere for cars to fill up with fuel no matter where they are headed. The same can’t be said for electric charging stations, however, as more remote areas of North America still don’t have adequate charging options for electric car drivers who might be passing through. In fact, the lack of charging stations is a key reason why some drivers are still hesitant to opt for an electric or plug-in hybrid vehicle rather than a gasoline-powered vehicle.  

But with more and more drivers wanting to take advantage of the many benefits that electric mobility has to offer, something will certainly have to change. Stellantis is making sure that it does. The auto group, which oversees the Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep and Ram brands, is teaming up with other automakers to greatly expand electric car charging accessibility across North America.

Right now, there are 32,000 DC fast charging stations and 2.3 million electric vehicles in the United States. By 2030, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory estimates that 30-42 million plug-in vehicles (including both purely electric and plug-in hybrid models) will be on the roadways. This means that an estimated 182,000 DC fast chargers will be needed to meet demand. 

How Many Charging Stations is Stellantis Building?

That’s a big gap, but Stellantis is prepared to play its part in closing it. Alongside BMW Group, General Motors, Honda, Hyundai, Kia and Mercedes-Benz Group, Stellantis is working to add at least 30,000 high-powered charging stations across North America.

Moreover, these stops will be more than just charging stations. In addition to the advanced charging ports, other amenities will be available as well. This includes things like restrooms, food service and retail stores. When possible and wherever it makes sense, canopies will also be installed. There will also be flagship stations that offer even more features, the details of which have yet to be revealed.

Thankfully, we won’t have to wait too long for these to start popping up. The first stations are expected to be installed in the summer of 2024. These initial locations will be along major highways and popular vacation routes. No doubt more rural areas will also be added in time as well.
